Walnut Way Conservation Corp

Outpost is honored to work with Walnut Way Conservation Corp as our 2021 Sustainable Agriculture Partner! Each year we partner with a deserving local nonprofit that aligns with our mission to create a healthy, diverse and sustainable community. This includes not only a grant of $4,725 from our Twin Pines Foundation, but the opportunity to volunteer with them, promote their programs and events, and even sell products in our store.

In 2021 we will be working with their Growing Youth Leadership program. They manage urban agriculture on 14 vacant lots in the City of Milwaukee, including over 100 fruit trees, a hoop house and on site composting. When the season comes you can find their delicious peaches in the produce section of your favorite Outpost!

Walnut Way's Marissa Cudworth explains this year's partnership as: "Our urban agriculture program at Walnut Way is in need of independent, sustainable facilities that will support our current farming capacities and allow us to expand our impact in the future. Outpost’s partnership will support the construction of a repurposed shipping container into a refrigeration and food processing facility in tandem with a two-car garage. Our goal is to build an innovative facility that will limit our food waste output, provide accessibility and protection to tools and equipment, and increase our capacity for providing fresh, chemical-free produce to the community."

Outpost 2020 Sustainable Agriculture Partner

Fondy Farm Project at Mequon Nature Preserve

In 2020, Outpost's Co-op Community Fund contributed more than $3,200 to assist with irrigation at the Fondy Farm Project at the Mequon Nature Preserve. Currently the 26 Hmong family farmers carry water to their fields.

Outpost also donated $1 to Fondy Food Center for every ballot cast in our 2020 Board Election, resulting in an additional $635!

We promoted their programs on social media and encouraged our shoppers to support their organization year-round through their various programs, such as the Fondy Farmer’s Market, Winter Farmer’s Market and by purchasing items like their Red Stone rice, the first and only rice grown and harvested in Wisconsin.

Outpost 2019 Sustainable Agriculture Partner

Teens Grow Greens

In 2019 Outpost partnered with Teens Grow Greens to implement a program called MyPlant where visitors to their greenhouses were able to bring their children and go through the process of planting a seedling they could take home. The goal was to spark curiosity and interest among youth in where our food comes from.

Children were given a terra cotta pot they could design and paint at an art station, then soil and compost was added, followed by a seedling, which was then watered. Finally kids could enjoy a healthy snack before taking their plants home.

Teens Grow Greens is a nonprofit that "develops teens through transformative experiences that cultivate belonging, skill-building and connections to opportunities that grow leadership." Their home base is the iconic Weber's Greenhouse garden facility.
