Yollande Deacon’s story begins in a small town of fewer than 1,000 people in western Cameroon, a mountainous region of West Africa with grassy fields and lush farms.
The community there is blessed with a climate and landscape that fosters agriculture throughout the year. The people are passionate about protecting their environment, which supports the local economy, culture and lifestyle.
Food takes center stage as part of family and community relationships that are rich in traditions and rituals. Yollande puts all of this rich history into her brand of authentic African spices — Afro Fusion Cuisine.
The spice blends are rooted in Yollande’s personal upbringing, culinary journey and experiences. In 2001, Yollande moved to Milwauke to pursue an MBA at Marquette University and started trying to recreate the flavors and blends of her native West Africa, using locally available produce.
In Milwaukee, Yollande was pleased to discover the role sustainable agriculture and farms plays in the local economy, culture and lifestyle. In 2012, she started her company as a way to raise money to fund a scholarship program at her high school in Cameroon. You’ll find Afro Fusion Cuisine at your favorite Outpost.
