Ashley Fisher (board incumbent serving since 2020)

CEO of a non-profit

Why do you want to be on the Outpost Natural Foods Board of Directors?

I've served on the Outpost Board of Directors since 2020. My role as current President has been unlike that served by four decades of past presidents. This year, I've led the Board through the search process for a new General Manager as we approach the retirement of our current General Manager.

I'd like to continue serving the community of Outpost owners with another term, creating continuity among Board leadership and helping support a successful transition for the future General Manager. I hold a Master of Public Administration and offer expertise in budget, finance, and policy analysis, which lend themselves well to the governance and fiduciary responsibilities of this Board.

What professional skills do you bring to a Board position of a $50 million business?

I hold a Master of Public Administration and experience in budget and financial analysis, policy analysis, strategic planning, change management, project management, and board development. Past trainings of significance include Lean/Six Sigma Process Improvement, in which I hold a Green Belt certification, as well as a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training that I undertook with the Board over a series of months during my current term.

Please describe how you would contribute to the diversity, equity, and inclusivity of the board.

Over a series of months on the Board, I undertook a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training that forever changed my understanding of myself as a white woman and how I interact with and interpret people of diverse races, ethnicities, and backgrounds. The process of dismantling racism and other forms of oppression (whether conscious or unconscious) is a lifelong process that I must approach within myself and my workplaces with humility and consistency.

It's a privilege to use this learning in service of a co-op made of diverse owners and filled with products from diverse vendors. In partnership with the Outpost Board, our General Manager, and guiding experts, I will do my piece to move this work forward and I will do it wholeheartedly.

Describe your prior involvement with community organizations and/or cooperatives.

Joining the Outpost Board of Directors marked my first community service activity in the Milwaukee area, having moved here in 2018. Prior to that, one foundational experience was serving as the Staff Coordinator at an intentional community called Holden Village, located in the Cascade Mountains of Central Washington. A volunteer position, the experience grounded my understanding that food, political, and other systems require constant, conscious choice and action. Person by person, hand in hand, we build the world we wish to see.
