Know where your food comes from

We love to tell you about our farmers. After all, these are the folks who bring to you the wholesome meats and poultry that you eat and we feel it's important that you know a little something about them, how they farm and why they do the things they do. Our meat buyers have developed good relationships with our farmers and suppliers - they know them by first name. If you have a question about any of our meats and poultry, just ask one of Outpost's meat department experts!

Outpost and Naturally-Raised

Not all 'natural' meats are equal. Many area grocers seem to be calling their meats "all natural." Since the USDA has not officially defined this term, all it means is that flavorings and preservatives have not been added post processing.

Here at Outpost Natural Foods, when we say "naturally-raised" meats we mean they're:

  • Raised without the use of antibiotics or hormones
  • Humanely raised in a minimal stress environment
  • Given free access to the outdoors
  • Fed 100% vegetarian feed
  • Never irradiated

Don't miss our handmade all-natural nitrate free sausage.

USDA Certified Organic

USDA Certified meats and poultry are raised under the strict rules and regulations established by the National Organics Standards Board under the National Organics Program. Learn more about organics!

When you see the USDA Certified Label, it means:

  • Raised without the use of antibiotics or hormones
  • Humanely raised in a minimal stress environment
  • Given free access to the outdoors
  • Fed USDA certified organic grains and vegetarian feed
  • Never irradiated
  • Processed at a USDA Certified Organic processing facility

The truth about fish

Living in the midwest, we're kind of landlocked when it comes to fresh marine seafood, and our local lakes, rivers and tributaries are under pressure from industrial contaminants. Some ocean fisheries are depleting rapdily, and some fish farms aren't eco-friendly. It's kind of a "What's a shopper to do?" situation. Well, you can come to Outpost! Our buyers bend over backwards to seek out sources of fresh sustainable and eco-friendly seafood and fish. It's what we've always done, although these days it's getting harder and harder to do and still maintain customer demand. One thing this is for certain, we will always be transparent about where our seafood comes from.

When you shop Outpost's seafood counter, you can trust we seek out

  • Abundant, well-managed fisheries
  • Environmentally friendly farming methods
  • No added hormones, antibiotics or added colors
  • No genetically modified organisms

Download the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood WATCH pocket guide to help you navigate the retail waters of buying seafood. Or download a free smart phone app. Both are great to have when dining out, too! Outpost buyers will not source fish and seafood in the RED category.

We're COOL!

At Outpost we practice Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) for our fresh meat, fish and seafood. It's been our practice since the beginning, but it's now the law for all food retailers! This is hard fought for legislation that sides with the consumer's right to know where their food comes from. Look on the label or ask one of our department experts.
