Hi, I'm Malcolm Woods

I’m the New Media Editor at Outpost, though I’m the old media editor, as well. In both capacities, I read, hear, photograph and write about food. I also eat food pretty regularly, all of which means I spend a lot of time thinking about food in...

A year of elementary eating

Postscript
Food, Love and Policy By Malcolm Woods on January 21, 2011

What's for lunch? If you're a student in one of America's public schools, the answer is probably chicken nuggets, pizza, meatloaf, bagel dogs or some other low-cost, homogenized, meal from the school's cafeteria.

We all have our own memories of choking down school lunches - the subject has spawned countless jokes and even given rise to real legislation (last December's Child Nutrition Bill), but just how bad are the lunches served in our nation's schools?

Well, one mother decided to find out firsthand, by eating the hot lunch served at the school where she worked, every day for a full year. Fed Up With Lunch is the blog she created to record - both in written descriptions and in photographs - the daily offerings at her school. It's a long, steady, carbohydrate-rich stream of "chicken" fingers and nuggets, meat formed into loaves and patties, listless greens and pale vegetables. We've linked to just one day's post above.

She has since finished her one-year experiment, has received some national publicity and recently announced a book deal. The book will be about her year-long experiment but will go a bit further, exploring the movement to make healthier, more nutritious and appealing foods to our nation's school children.

Her daily blog is an eye-opener. Check it out here. But do it after lunch.
