London's drastic step

Food, Love and Policy By Unknown #2 on April 3, 2008
Often buried deep in all the talk about climate change is one sobering admission - it's going to take much more than changing light bulbs and reusing shopping bags to create real change on a level that might actually make a difference.
Anyone brave enough to take a peak at the sort of lifestyle changes that may be essential in the efforts to stem climate change might check out what is happening in London.
The city adopted a $16 daily traffic fee several years ago aimed at reducing the number of cars pouring into the city's center. It's reduced traffic counts in the city's cramped downtown streets significantly. Now, London's leaders are poised to impose a carbon emission fee on the city's drivers which would run up to $50 per day on the biggest polluting vehicles.
Link: In London, a levy for sins of emission - Los Angeles Times.
The new plan doesn't take effect until October, and there's a possibility that the strong reaction by London residents may force changes or even an abandonment of the plan (the new fee is sure to be a focus on the next local elections on May 1), but the fact that it's even being considered ($50 to drive your SUV into the city per day!) ought to give one pause.
