The global crisis in food costs

Rice. Wheat. Corn.
Staples across the globe. Food basics.
But an alarming jump in prices for these basic commodities has triggered a crisis. The cost of each of those grains has more than doubled in the past year alone, triggering riots, social unrest and fears that more people will go hungry.

The dramatic increase in food costs is attributable to numerous factors, some linked and others unrelated. Population growth, global warming and the biofuel boom have all contributed, but the poor economic climate has also sparked speculation by investors that has undoubtedly pushed costs higher.
