Yields DROP with GM crops?

Food, Love and Policy By Unknown #2 on April 22, 2008
Proponents of GM crops have long touted increased yields as one of the main benefits of their engineered plants. Now, a major study conducted in the United Kingdom provides evidence that in fact the opposite is true - GM crops have lower yields than conventional crops. The study, using soy beans, repeated the findings of an earlier study conducted n Nebraska. Link: Exposed: the great GM crops myth - Green Living, Environment - The Independent.
And what has been the response of the agribusiness giants pushing the Gm crops? They note that the GM crops were not engineered specifically to produce increased yields, only to withstand the application of pesticides. But don't worry, they add, they're back in the lab now working on GM crops that will offer increased yields. Other scientists aren't so sure, saying that today's plants are operating near their peak productivity.
