Pesticides... more than a pest

Postscript
Food, Love and Policy By Unknown #2 on June 19, 2009
"Atrazine, a pesticide found in 71% of U.S. drinking water. Banned in Europe, Atrazine disrupts hormone systems."

"An average American child gets 5+ servings of pesticide residues in their food and water each day."
"8 different pesticide residues were detected in one strawberry sample. 680 of 726 tested positive for residues." "888 million lbs of pesticides are applied each year in the U.S. That's nearly 3 lbs per person."

Those tidbits flash across the screen when you visit www.whatsonmyfood.org a web site that promotes public education on pesticides.
According to the site, pesticides are on our food, even after washing. They are in our bodies for years, and they are in our environment, traveling for miles on wind, water and dust.
So what can you do? Educate yourself. Whats On My Food offers a searchable database linking pesticides to food, and reporting on the toxic levels of each one. You can search by food or by pesticide.
You can also buy a water filter and buy organic, of course.

Comments

We (PANNA) made an error extracting the statistic on strawberries from our database. The correct statistic is: "680 out of 726 samples tested positive for pesticides with the maximum number of residues detected on any one sample being 8." We have removed the statistic from the website and will make a correction. No other statistics on the website are affected by this error. Posted by: Brian Hill, PANNA | June 23 at 12:04 PM
