A food crisis in the city

Urban gardening has made headlines around the country during this recession, with people turning to their own resources to counter high food prices at a time of increased unemployment, wage cuts and hiring freezes.

But the situation in Detroit takes it to an alarming level. As this CNN report reveals, this Midwestern city surrounded by rich and prolific farmland is a barren wilderness for urban residents who have no supermarket chain to rely on. Food pantries are serving more people than ever before, and are reporting they serve a new demographic: therecently laid-off middle class resident. Meanwhile, urban gardens are sprouting up on the many vacant lots that litter the landscape.
