The next one is due this year and because of the enormous scope and reach of the legislation, some folks are renaming it the Food and Farm Bill. We all know that demand for organic food is booming. In fact, the demand is growing at a faster rate than US farmers can supply, in part because it takes three years to transition a farm to organic. Scientific American has a brief report on recent hearings before Congress (it's the year of the farm bill, remember) and what steps some are suggesting to help American farmers go organic. The rapid loss of rain forests in Central and South America has received a lot of publicity in recent years, but a broad swath of boreal forest north of here is endangered, too.
