It was hot in England this summer. The temperature scraped the century mark for a few days around London, and a long heatwave embraced the entire UK midsummer. The English, who aren't terribly used to hot weather, grumbled and sweat and fanned themselves - this is not a place with a lot of air conditioning. Could organic food actually be better for you? We know it's better for the environment and those of us who buy organic often feel it just plain tastes better, but scientific evidence of the nutritional superiority of organic foods has been hard to find. But a new study by researchers at Glasgow and Liverpool universities has found a huge difference between organic and conventional milk. The Guardian newspaper in the UK had a good idea for a story: ask a noted food author to create a meal with a conscience. The paper asks if his recipe is the most ethical meal on the planet. Debatable, we think. But it raises the question: what constitutes ethical eating? Consuming only locally-grown foods? Organic? Fair trade? What trade-offs are acceptable? Food for thought.
