Environmental Responsibility

It has always been a part of Outpost’s mission to be a sustainable and environmentally responsible business. To this end we have implemented the following practices.

  • Environmentally responsible products: From soup to nuts and beyond, Outpost has a strict product policy that ensures only the highest standards are always met.
  • Company Recycling: Outpost recycles at all locations, including the commissary and the administrative offices.
  • Community Recycling: Outpost is a certified handler for recycling compact fluorescent lightbulbs. Shoppers can drop off old bulbs at any Outpost store location.
  • Green Energy: Outpost is a champion of sustainable energy. In 1999, Outpost became the first commercial Wisconsin customer of We Energies’ “Energy For Tomorrow” program. Outpost on State Street utelizes natural daylighting as part of its energy saving program. Energy saving equipment can be found at all three stores and we currently have a designated 'environmental savings account' to fund future green initiatives in our cooperative.
  • State Street store is a “green building” designed from the ground up to be sustainable and perform efficiently.
  • All stores and locations are designed using “green” or enviornmentally safe and ecologically sound finishes, paints and materials.
  • All store locations have beautiful natural gardens to take the pressure off of storm water runoff from parking lots. Plus, the aesthetic beauty helps create a pleasing and welcoming environment for shoppers, helping to reduce stress, provide visual relief and also provide microhabitats for wildlife!
  • Currently, our main delivery truck is powered by compressed natural gas, a fuel that burns clean and is sourced domestically.
  • We Energies has partnered with Outpost in providing a solar panel array and educational kiosk at the Bay View store. Shoppers can see how much energy is created by the sun, how many homes it would heat and how many pounds of carbon dioxide has been offset. Check our solar panels at work!
  • Outpost partnered with Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, Marquette University and In-Sink-Erator to do a pilot program that will analyze the impact of wet waste (food waste, specifically) on the city’s water and sewerage systems through a variety of recycling, composting and methane recapture programs.
  • Outpost is a partner with the Lindsay Heights Neighborhood Health Alliance. The goal of the Alliance is to end poverty, crime and hunger in Milwaukee’s African-American central city neighborhoods through outreach programs that promote healthy lifestyles, wellness and business development and engage in neighbor to neighbor interaction.
